The Federal State of Brandenburg is one of Germany''s leading bioenergy production regions. Together with the bordering regions of Poland the entire region has enjoyed strong investment in industrial biomass and bioenergy plants since German re-unification. Large forest reserves and efficient agricultural structures as well as State and Federal subsidies for bioenergy development have provided optimal conditions for strong growth in this sector.

Over 800 million Euros have been invested in the bioenergy sector in Brandenburg over the past 6 years. With an annual production capacity of over 250.000 Tonnes Brandenburg is one of Europes leading Biodiesel production regions. With recent investments in the bioethanol sector (180.000 t/a) Brandenburg is in a good position to play a leading role in this emerging sector.
Currently some 31 agricultural biogas digesters with an average size of 500 KW are in operation in regional farms. This number will double by the end of 2006 and development of this sector could lead to over 100 plants by the end of the decade.
Forest wood fuel is used for over 850 local heating plants under 1 MW, 14 larger biomass power plants (average size of 20 MW) employ waste wood. The annual woody biomass fuel consumption in Brandenburg is currently over 1 Mio. T/A. The German renewable power feed in tariff will promote expansion of mid-sized combined heat and power plants based on forest wood fuel and current plants for district heating are considering repowering to combined heat and power production.
The State is interested in promoting future sectors including BtL fuels and biorefineries for the production of raw materials for bio-plastics.
